runDisney Races and Events - Magic in the Planning

By Alyssa Howard

I have to be honest with you: runDisney races are firmly on my bucket list. As a runner myself, the idea of lacing up before sunrise, running through Cinderella Castle, and crossing a finish line to earn a one-of-a-kind Disney medal sounds pretty much perfect. So while I haven’t done one yet, I’ve done a deep dive into everything you need to know, and I’m excited to share it all here.

Whether you’re a seasoned half marathoner or someone who has never run a race in your life, runDisney events have something for you. From 5Ks designed for casual participants to the legendary Dopey Challenge (four races over four consecutive days), there’s a distance and a theme for every runner. And yes, costumes are absolutely encouraged.

The most important thing to understand from the start? These events sell out fast, sometimes within hours of registration opening. Planning ahead isn’t just a suggestion — it’s a necessity. Let’s walk through everything you need to know.

What Are runDisney Races?

runDisney is Disney’s official race series, offering themed race weekends at Walt Disney World and (in most years) the Disneyland Resort, along with virtual events for runners who can’t make it to the parks in person. Courses wind through the theme parks themselves, which means you’re running past iconic landmarks, spotting beloved characters along the way, and stopping for photos if the mood strikes. (And it will. It absolutely will.)

Race weekends typically include multiple distances, from a 5K all the way up to a full marathon depending on the event. Most weekends also feature challenge options that combine two or more races for extra medals and extra bragging rights. Yoga sessions and kids’ races round out many weekends, making it a fun experience for the whole family even if not everyone is running.

Your registration fee includes a race bib, a themed shirt, and a finisher medal. And these aren’t your average participation medals — runDisney medals are genuinely beautiful, collectible pieces that runners display with pride. There’s a reason people train for months for this.

Registration: What You Need to Know

Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World | Magic in the Planning

Registration for runDisney events takes place online through rundisney.com. All registration times are Eastern Time, so if you’re on the West Coast or outside the US, plan accordingly. Because demand is so high, popular races can sell out in minutes once registration opens.

A few important rules to be aware of before you register: registrations cannot be transferred between individuals, event weekends, or to events that are already sold out. Make sure the event you’re registering for is the one you actually want, because there’s no swapping later.

Once you’re registered, you’ll receive a confirmation email. Hold onto that, because you’ll need it for the Health and Fitness Expo.

The Health and Fitness Expo

Before race day, every runner must visit the runDisney Health and Fitness Expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports to pick up their race bib, shirt, and any merchandise they pre-purchased. This is not optional — you cannot participate in your race without picking up your bib in person. The Expo typically runs for two to three days before each race weekend.

You’ll also want to complete your required digital waiver and retrieve your Expo Check-In Pass through your runDisney account before you arrive, as this will speed up the process considerably.

The Expo is a great experience in its own right, with runDisney merchandise for sale and a fun atmosphere, but it does get crowded. If you go on the first day, you’ll have the best selection of merchandise but the longest lines. Later days are less crowded, though some sizes and items may sell out.

Theme Park Tickets Are Separate

This one surprises a lot of people! You do not need a theme park ticket to race. Your race registration gives you access to the course, which runs through the parks in the early morning hours before they open to regular guests. However, if you want to spend the day in the parks after your race (which, yes, you absolutely should), you will need to purchase theme park tickets and make a park reservation separately.

About Club runDisney

Club runDisney is a paid annual membership program that gives dedicated runners a few key advantages, most notably early access to race registration. There are three tiers: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Gold and Platinum members get early registration windows ahead of the general public, which can make a real difference for the most popular events. Platinum members also receive upgraded corral placement and enhanced Expo benefits.

Club runDisney membership does not include race registration fees — those are still purchased separately. But if you’re planning to run multiple events in a season or are worried about your preferred race selling out, the membership may be worth looking into. You can learn more about the current membership tiers on the runDisney website.

The 2026-2027 runDisney Race Schedule

It’s worth noting that for the 2026-2027 season, all in-person runDisney race weekends are taking place exclusively at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. There are no Disneyland race weekends this season due to ongoing construction at the Disneyland Resort. Virtual events are available to runners with US mailing addresses.

Here’s what the current season looks like.

Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend: October 22-25, 2026

The fall race weekend is one of the most beloved on the runDisney calendar, and for good reason. The 2026 Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend is themed around the tastes and tales of the World Showcase countries at EPCOT, which is such a fun concept.

The weekend includes a French-inspired 5K featuring the Aristocats, a festive Mexican-themed 10K hosted by Los Tres Caballeros, and a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Half Marathon led by Mary Poppins. For runners who want an extra challenge, the Disney Two Course Challenge combines the 10K and Half Marathon for a total of 19.3 miles.

One of the highlights of this weekend is the post-race party at EPCOT on Sunday evening, which is included with Half Marathon and Challenge registration. Additional party tickets are available for family and friends who want to join the celebration.

General registration opened February 10, 2026, and at this point all in-person races are sold out (with the exception of post-race party tickets). If you missed it, now is the time to start watching for the 2027 dates.

The Health and Fitness Expo will be held at ESPN Wide World of Sports on the following days: Thursday, October 22 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM; Friday, October 23 from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM; and Saturday, October 24 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Race start times are early, as is tradition for all runDisney events. The 5K begins Friday at 4:30 AM, the 10K is Saturday at 5:00 AM, and the Half Marathon is Sunday at 5:00 AM. Pricing ranged from $125 for the 5K to $449 for the Two Course Challenge.

Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend: January 6-10, 2027

Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World | Magic in the Planning

The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is the crown jewel of the runDisney calendar. It’s the biggest event of the year and the only opportunity to run a full marathon with runDisney. The 2027 edition is extra special because it marks the 30th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Half Marathon, with Donald Duck serving as the star of every race.

The weekend includes a 5K with Pluto, a 10K with Chip ‘n’ Dale, a Half Marathon featuring Donald and Daisy, and a full Marathon headlined by Mickey and Minnie. For those who want to really push themselves, Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge combines the Half Marathon and the full Marathon for 39.3 miles and an extra medal. And then there’s the Dopey Challenge, which includes all four races over four consecutive days for a truly staggering 48.6 miles total and six finisher medals. Yes, six.

Club runDisney Gold and Platinum registration opened March 10, 2026, with general registration opening March 17, 2026. All events are currently sold out. Pricing ranged from $125 for the 5K up to $769 for the Dopey Challenge (at the early registration price).

Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend: February 25-March 1, 2027

The Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend is one of the most popular events in the entire runDisney lineup, and the 2027 edition is themed around Disney Princesses who dare to forge their own paths. Tiana hosts a dreamy 5K, Snow White leads the 10K, and Jasmine hosts the Half Marathon. Runners can also take on the Disney Fairy Tale Challenge, which combines the 10K and Half Marathon for 19.3 miles, and there’s also a Princess Yoga session at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Sunday morning.

A quick note on registration: general registration was originally scheduled to open June 2, 2026, but hit a technical snag and was delayed. The new general registration date is Monday, June 8, 2026, at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Club runDisney Gold and Platinum members had early access beginning May 26. If you’ve been waiting to register, mark your calendar for June 8 and be ready to go the moment that window opens.

runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend: April 15-18, 2027

Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World | Magic in the Planning

The Springtime Surprise Weekend is the newest addition to the runDisney lineup, having debuted in 2022, and it has a fun twist: the themes change completely every year, so each edition is a fresh experience. Distances typically include a 5K, 10K, 10-Miler, and a multi-race challenge. The 2027 themes have not yet been announced.

Club runDisney registration for this event opens June 30, 2026, and general registration opens July 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM Eastern Time.

runDisney Virtual Races

Not able to make it to Walt Disney World in person? runDisney’s virtual race series lets you participate from wherever you are. Virtual events typically include a themed bib, a commemorative finisher medal, and a downloadable race kit with start and finish lines, mile markers, and a finisher certificate. It’s a great way to earn some Disney bling and stay motivated in your training.

Here’s what’s on the virtual calendar for 2026:

The runDisney Virtual Series runs June 1 through August 31, 2026, and typically includes three separate 5K races plus a challenge for runners who complete all three. Registration opens April 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM Eastern Time.

The runDisney Virtual Spooktacular is a brand-new event running October 1-31, 2026. Details about the races and themes are still forthcoming, but registration opens August 11, 2026.

The runDisney Virtual 12Ks of Christmas runs December 1-31, 2026. This festive event gives runners the chance to earn four commemorative medals (which double as Christmas ornaments!) by completing three 4K virtual races. Participants also receive a long-sleeved hooded shirt, a holiday CORKCICLE mug with a hot cocoa kit, a digital race bib, and a downloadable race toolkit. Registration opens October 6, 2026. (This one sounds so fun, honestly.)

Tips for Your First runDisney Race

Since these events sell out so fast, the biggest tip I can offer is to be ready the moment registration opens. Create your account on rundisney.com ahead of time, have your payment information saved, and know exactly which event and distance you want. Being even two or three minutes behind can mean missing out entirely.

A few other things worth knowing: runDisney requires all participants to maintain a minimum pace of 16 minutes per mile. If you fall behind the pacers (often called the “balloon ladies”), you’ll be swept from the course. A 15-minute-per-mile training pace is recommended to give yourself a comfortable buffer. For half marathons, you may also need to provide proof of time from an officially timed race for start group placement.

If you’re visiting the parks after your race, don’t underestimate how tired you’ll be! Build in some downtime. And if you’re bringing family members who aren’t running, remember they can purchase Expo passes and post-race party tickets separately for many events.

For the most up-to-date registration information on all runDisney events, be sure to visit the official runDisney website.
