Halloween in Disneyland 2021: Oogie Boogie Bash and More Halloween Fun! | magicintheplanning.com

By Alyssa Howard

Halloween in Disneyland is one of those things that genuinely has to be experienced to be believed. The whole resort transforms in the most magical way, and there’s something about the combination of fall décor, Disney Villains roaming the parks, and the smell of seasonal treats that just hits differently at the Disneyland Resort. This time of year is definitely one of my favorites!

And the good news for 2026: it’s all coming back. Disney has officially confirmed that Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort is scheduled to return from August 21 through October 31, 2026, across both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. And the Oogie Boogie Bash dates are now officially announced! Let’s break down everything you need to know.

When Does Halloween Start at Disneyland in 2026?

Disneyland doesn’t wait for October either… the Halloween season kicks off on August 21, 2026, and runs all the way through October 31. That’s over two months of spooky seasonal fun across both parks!

The beauty of Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort is that so much of it is included with regular park admission. From the moment you walk through the gates, you’ll notice the seasonal décor, the themed attractions, and the Halloween atmosphere woven throughout every corner of the resort. The separately ticketed Oogie Boogie Bash is the big headliner event, but honestly, there’s so much to enjoy even without a party ticket.

Halloween Time in Disneyland Park

Halloween pumpkin decorations at a Disney park | Magic in the Planning

Disneyland Park goes all-in for the Halloween season, and it’s genuinely one of the most atmospheric versions of the park you’ll ever experience. Here’s what’s confirmed for 2026:

Main Street Pumpkin Festival

The beloved Main Street Pumpkin Festival returns, filling Main Street, U.S.A. with hundreds of hand-carved pumpkins, including the iconic giant Mickey Mouse jack-o-lantern. You’ll also spot pumpkins shaped like Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto above the entry turnstiles as you walk in. It’s the kind of detail that makes you stop and smile before you’ve even made it to the park!

Haunted Mansion Holiday

One of the most beloved seasonal overlays in all of Disney parks, the Haunted Mansion transforms into Haunted Mansion Holiday, a full Nightmare Before Christmas takeover inspired by Tim Burton’s beloved film. Jack Skellington takes over the haunted halls with ghoul-tide surprises around every corner. If you’ve never experienced this overlay, it’s an absolute must. And if you have… you already know you’re riding it again.

Halloween Screams

On select evenings, Disneyland Park comes alive with Halloween Screams, a spectacular projection and special effects show featuring fireworks above Sleeping Beauty Castle. Maleficent makes a dramatic appearance in the projections, and the show runs at several locations throughout the park, including Main Street, U.S.A. and in front of “it’s a small world.” It’s stunning, and it’s included with park admission on select nights.

Disney Characters in Halloween Attire

Throughout the season, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be seen decked out in new festive Halloween attire. Keep your eyes open for character sightings and photo opportunities throughout the park!

Halloween Time in Disney California Adventure Park

Disney California Adventure Park gets just as much Halloween love as Disneyland Park, with its own set of seasonal experiences included with regular park admission (in addition to the separately ticketed Oogie Boogie Bash, which we’ll cover below).

Radiator “Screams” in Cars Land

Every Halloween season, Cars Land transforms into Radiator “Screams” for Haul-O-Ween, and it’s one of the most charming seasonal makeovers at any Disney park. Lightning McQueen, Mater, and the rest of the Cars gang cruise around in their Halloween “car-stumes,” and the entire land gets a festive, family-friendly Halloween makeover. Two of the land’s attractions also get the Halloween treatment: Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween and Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Monsters After Dark

At night, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission BREAKOUT! transforms into Guardians of the Galaxy: Monsters After Dark. The storyline shifts as guests team up with Rocket on a daring Halloween mission to rescue a fellow Guardian. The nighttime-only overlay makes this a great reason to stay in the park after dark.

Mickey’s Trick and Treat

This interactive, family-friendly stage show runs multiple times throughout the day at Disney Theater in Hollywood Land. Mickey and his friends share some not-so-scary Halloween stories in a show that’s perfect for younger guests. Note that this show is not exclusive to Oogie Boogie Bash party nights, so everyone can catch it!

Buena Vista Street and Oogie Boogie Décor

Oogie Boogie himself casts a shadowy eye from atop the Main Gate marquee, while Buena Vista Street gets its own Halloween makeover: black bats swarm Carthay Circle Theatre’s bell tower, a Headless Horseman statue appears, and spooky decorations line the street. Even just walking through the park entrance feels like an event.

Oogie Boogie Bash: A Disney Halloween Party

The Oogie Boogie Bash is the separately ticketed, after-hours Halloween party at Disney California Adventure Park, and it’s one of the most popular events the Disneyland Resort hosts all year. And the great news: the 2026 dates are officially announced!

The party runs from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with ticket holders allowed to enter the park as early as 3:00 PM. Here are all the confirmed 2026 event dates:

August: 18, 20, 23, 25, 27, 30

September: 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 27, 29

October: 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27, 29, 31

Ticket pricing has not yet been announced, but based on prior years, budget somewhere in the $139–$199 range per person depending on the date, with weekend and October dates typically at the higher end. Tickets must be purchased online and are not available on the day of the event. The limit is 8 tickets per guest per event date, and no discounts apply. Tickets are nonrefundable.

*Guests ages 2 and under do not require a ticket.

What’s included with your Oogie Boogie Bash ticket:

  • Immersive Treat Trails with Halloween-inspired music, décor, and Disney Villain sightings along the way
  • Frightfully Fun Parade, a masquerade cavalcade featuring Mickey, Minnie, and Disney Villains
  • Villains Grove, where Redwood Creek Challenge Trail transforms into an immersive walk-through experience featuring the worlds of Ursula, Scar, and other Disney Villains
  • Character sightings in Halloween costumes, including some rare appearances you won’t find on regular park days
  • Disney PhotoPass digital downloads are included in the price of your ticket (scan the QR code on your event wristband via the Disneyland app)
  • Shorter wait times on popular attractions during the after-hours event

One important note: Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Premier Pass, and Single Pass are not available during the event.

The Oogie Boogie Bash consistently sells out, sometimes months in advance. Keep an eye on the official Disneyland website for ticket on-sale dates and check back here for updates!

Plaza de la Familia and Día de los Muertos

One of the things that makes Halloween at the Disneyland Resort feel so special and distinct from Walt Disney World is the celebration of Día de los Muertos woven throughout the season.

Plaza de la Familia returns to Paradise Gardens Park in Disney California Adventure, inspired by the world of Coco. This festive area features live entertainment, seasonal food, crafts, and interactive activities. A street show called “A Musical Celebration of Coco” brings Mariachi music to the Paradise Gardens Bandstand several times a day, and guests can enjoy a photo opportunity with Miguel, the Arbol de la Vida (Tree of Life), and an art exhibit celebrating the world of Coco. It’s genuinely beautiful, and a wonderful counterpart to the spookier side of the Halloween season.

Over in Disneyland Park’s Frontierland, El Zócalo Park features a special tribute to Día de los Muertos with iconic skeleton figurines, brightly colored flowers, and traditional ofrenda-inspired décor. It’s a quieter, more contemplative corner of the park that’s easy to walk past, so make a point of stopping.

Halloween in Downtown Disney

Downtown Disney gets in on the seasonal fun too, decorating for Halloween and offering seasonal treats and merchandise throughout the resort. No park ticket required!

Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit returns as a family-friendly pumpkin scavenger hunt available for purchase across the Disneyland Resort. Whether you complete the hunt or not, you can return your game board to a redemption location for a prize. It’s a great activity for families who want something structured and fun across multiple areas of the resort. Pricing and availability details for 2026 haven’t been announced yet, but based on prior years, expect it to be available starting late August.

Disney’s Happiest Haunts Guided Tour

For guests who want a deeper, more immersive Halloween experience, Disney’s Happiest Haunts: The Villains’ Trail Guided Tour takes guests through Disneyland Park with chilling stories, thrilling experiences, Lightning Lane entry, and preferred viewing for the Halloween-themed nighttime spectacular. It’s a premium experience, but if you love the history and storytelling side of Disney, it’s a really special way to experience the season. Check the official Disneyland site for pricing and availability closer to the season.

Tips for Planning Halloween in Disneyland

Best Time to Visit for Crowds and Weather

Star Wars - Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland | Magic in the Planning

Southern California weather is one of the great advantages of Halloween at Disneyland. Unlike Florida, you won’t be battling humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. August and September evenings in Anaheim are warm and comfortable, and by October the temperatures are genuinely lovely.

For crowds, the same general principles apply as Disney World: weeknights in September are typically the least busy, with shorter wait times and a more relaxed atmosphere. October weekends get significantly more crowded, particularly as Halloween approaches. If you have any flexibility, aim for a mid-week visit in September or early October.

Avoid Halloween night itself and any weekend in October if crowds are a concern. Those are the most packed nights of the entire season.

Oogie Boogie Bash vs. Regular Park Days

This is the big question for most visitors planning a Disneyland Halloween trip, and it’s worth thinking through carefully.

On a regular park day during Halloween Time, you get full access to all the seasonal décor, Haunted Mansion Holiday, Radiator Screams, Mickey’s Trick and Treat, Halloween Screams on select evenings, and Plaza de la Familia. That’s genuinely a lot, and it’s all included with your regular park admission.

The Oogie Boogie Bash adds the Treat Trails, the Frightfully Fun Parade, Villains Grove, rare character sightings, and PhotoPass downloads. If those experiences are important to you (and Villains Grove in particular is a really special walk-through experience), the party is worth it. If you’re on a tight budget or visiting with very young children who may not make it to 11:00 PM, a regular park day during Halloween Time still delivers a fantastic seasonal experience.

My recommendation: if you can swing it, do one of each. A regular park day gives you the full-day experience with all the seasonal touches, and an Oogie Boogie Bash night gives you the exclusive entertainment. You’ll get the most out of both.

Pro Tip: Just like at Magic Kingdom, party nights at Disney California Adventure do affect your regular park day. On Oogie Boogie Bash nights, the park begins transitioning to the after-hours event in the early evening, so general admission guests will be asked to leave. Plan your California Adventure days accordingly!

Costume Guidelines for Guests

Guests are encouraged to dress up for the Oogie Boogie Bash, and Disney does a wonderful job of leaning into the costume spirit at this event. A few things to keep in mind:

For guests 13 years old and younger: costumes and some masks may be worn. Masks must provide unobstructed peripheral vision with openings that allow the eyes to be fully seen.

For guests 14 years of age and older:

  • You may dress as your favorite character, but you are not allowed to pose for pictures or sign autographs.
  • Your costume must be family-friendly and must not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable, or violent.
  • No fake weapons that resemble or could be mistaken for actual weapons are allowed.
  • No sharp or pointed objects that could harm another guest, even accidentally.
  • Costumes must not drag on the ground.
  • Capes are allowed as long as they don’t fall below the waist.
  • Layered costumes or props are strongly discouraged and may require additional security screening.
  • Disney does allow transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords, tutus, and headwear, as long as headwear doesn’t cover your face.
  • No masks of any kind may be worn.
  • Themed shirts and hats are completely acceptable!

Always check Disneyland’s official park rules before you pack, as these guidelines can be updated. On regular (non-party) park days, costumes for guests 14 and older are generally not permitted.

Lightning Lane Strategy During the Season

Halloween season brings higher crowds, especially on weekends, and a Lightning Lane strategy will make a real difference.

For regular park days, prioritize Lightning Lane for your highest-demand attractions early in the day. At Disneyland Park, that typically means Indiana Jones Adventure, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and Radiator Springs Racers at California Adventure. During Halloween Time, Haunted Mansion Holiday also draws longer lines than usual, since everyone wants to experience the overlay.

For Oogie Boogie Bash nights, keep in mind that Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Premier Pass, and Single Pass are not available during the event. Use the early 3:00 PM entry window to knock out rides before the party crowd arrives, and then shift your focus to the exclusive entertainment once things kick off at 6:00 PM.

Is Halloween in Disneyland Worth It?

Absolutely, and I say that as someone who genuinely loves both Disney resorts during the Halloween season.

The pros: So much of the Halloween experience at Disneyland is included with regular park admission. Haunted Mansion Holiday, Radiator Screams, Halloween Screams, Plaza de la Familia, and all the seasonal décor don’t cost a penny beyond your park ticket. That’s an incredible amount of seasonal content. If you add the Oogie Boogie Bash, you get one of the best after-hours party experiences either Disney resort offers, with Villains Grove being genuinely unlike anything at Walt Disney World.

The cons: The Oogie Boogie Bash sells out fast and isn’t cheap, and unlike Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, you can’t visit all four parks to spread out your itinerary. Disney California Adventure is a smaller park, which means the party atmosphere is more concentrated… which can feel either intimate or crowded depending on the night.

Who it’s best for: Families who love Disney Villains, guests who appreciate the more immersive walk-through experiences like Villains Grove, anyone who hasn’t experienced Haunted Mansion Holiday, and visitors looking for a slightly more laid-back Halloween party vibe compared to Walt Disney World.

If you can time your visit for a weeknight in September, you’ll get the best of both worlds: manageable crowds, comfortable weather, full access to all the seasonal experiences, and (if you grab a party ticket) an Oogie Boogie Bash night that won’t be packed to the brim.

Final Thoughts on Halloween in Disneyland

Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort runs from August 21 through October 31, 2026, and it’s one of the most beloved seasonal celebrations either Disney resort puts on. Between the stunning Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay, the Radiator Screams makeover in Cars Land, Plaza de la Familia, and the Oogie Boogie Bash, there’s genuinely something for everyone.

Now that the Oogie Boogie Bash dates are officially out, it’s time to start planning! Those tickets will go fast, so keep an eye on the official Disneyland site for the ticket on-sale announcement and be ready to book the moment they drop.

Plan intentionally, book early, and you’ll be walking under Oogie Boogie’s watchful eye on Buena Vista Street before you know it.
