Visiting Disneyland in October | Magic in the Planning

By Alyssa Howard

Visiting Disneyland in October means stepping into the heart of Halloween season at the Disneyland Resort.

October 2026 is one of the most festive and atmospheric months of the entire year at Disneyland. Both parks are fully transformed for Halloween Time, Oogie Boogie Bash is running on select nights at Disney California Adventure, and the cooler fall temperatures make spending long days in the parks genuinely enjoyable.

The catch is that October has become one of the busiest months of the entire year. Fall breaks for schools across California, Utah, and Nevada, the Columbus Day holiday weekend, and the magnetic pull of Halloween itself combine to create sustained crowd levels that surprise many first-time October visitors. With the right plan, though, October can be an absolutely magical time to visit the parks.

In this guide, we’ll break down exactly what to expect so you can decide if October is the right time for your Disneyland vacation.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Disneyland?

Cozy Cone Motel at Night | Magic in the PlanningPros to visiting Disneyland in October:

  • Halloween Time is at its peak – October is the heart and soul of the Halloween season at Disneyland. Both parks are fully decorated with stunning fall and Halloween theming, including Haunted Mansion Holiday, Halloween Screams nighttime spectacular, the Main Street Pumpkin Festival, Guardians of the Galaxy: Monsters After Dark, and the full Cars Land Haul-O-Ween transformation. All of this is included with regular park admission, and October is when the atmosphere truly hits its peak.
  • Oogie Boogie Bash – The popular separately ticketed Halloween party at Disney California Adventure runs on select nights throughout October. October Bash dates tend to sell out the fastest of the entire season, so purchase tickets well in advance if this is on your list.
  • Beautiful fall weather – October brings noticeably cooler and more comfortable temperatures compared to the summer months. With average highs around 76 degrees and pleasant evenings, October is one of the most enjoyable months weather-wise to spend a full day in the parks.
  • The Halloween atmosphere is unmatched – There is simply nowhere quite like Disneyland during Halloween season. The combination of beloved ride overlays, festive decor throughout every corner of the resort, seasonal food and merchandise, and the overall spooky-but-family-friendly atmosphere makes October a genuinely special time to visit.
  • Plaza de la Familia – This beautiful Día de los Muertos celebration inspired by Pixar’s “Coco” continues through November 2 at Disney California Adventure, adding a cultural richness to the fall season that is unique and wonderful.

Cons to visiting Disneyland in October:

  • October is one of the busiest months of the entire year – This surprises many visitors who assume summer is the peak season. Halloween’s growing popularity, combined with fall breaks for schools across California, Utah, and Nevada, makes October one of the top three busiest months of the year at Disneyland. Crowds get progressively worse as the month goes on.
  • Columbus Day weekend is extremely crowded – Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Columbus Day falls on October 12 in 2026, and the surrounding weekend (October 9-12) is one of the busiest of the entire year. Many West Coast school districts have fall break that same week, making this period especially intense.
  • Halloween weekend will be very busy – Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, and Nevada Day on October 31 creates an extra-long holiday weekend. Expect some of the highest crowd levels of the entire month on October 30 and 31.
  • Oogie Boogie Bash affects California Adventure hours – On party nights (mostly Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays), DCA closes to general admission guests at 6:00 PM. This affects park dynamics significantly in October, as Bash nights are more frequent and crowds shift toward Disneyland Park on those evenings.
  • Higher ticket prices – October is one of the most expensive months of the year to visit Disneyland. Ticket prices and hotel rates reflect the high demand of the Halloween season.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean may still be closed – Pirates of the Caribbean closed May 4 for refurbishment with no reopening date announced. Check the status closer to your travel date.

Bottom Line: October 2026 is a spectacular time to experience Halloween at Disneyland, but it comes with real crowd challenges. The atmosphere is unmatched, the weather is lovely, and there is so much to experience. Just go in with realistic expectations about crowds, plan around the busiest dates, and have a solid daily strategy in place!

Weather at Disneyland in October

October brings a welcome and noticeable shift in weather at Disneyland. After months of summer heat, the temperatures finally start to feel genuinely fall-like, making October one of the most pleasant months of the year to spend time in the parks. Mornings and evenings can feel quite cool, especially later in the month, so layers are important.

What to expect:

  • Highs: around 76°F
  • Lows: around 63°F
  • Humidity: low, with dry and comfortable air
  • Rain: still very unlikely, though chances increase slightly compared to summer

What it feels like in the parks:

October mornings start cool and comfortable, warming up to pleasant temperatures by midday. Unlike the summer months, there is no oppressive afternoon heat to push you out of the parks. Evenings cool off quickly and can feel genuinely chilly by late October, especially once the sun goes down during nighttime events. If you are planning to stay for Halloween Screams or Oogie Boogie Bash, bring a light jacket or layer.

The comfortable weather is one of October’s biggest strengths. You can stay in the parks from rope drop through the evening without battling heat or humidity, which makes a real difference in how much you can experience in a single day.

Bottom Line: October weather at Disneyland is genuinely lovely. Cool mornings, comfortable afternoons, and crisp evenings make it ideal for long days in the parks. Pack layers for the evening, especially later in the month, and enjoy some of the best weather of the year.

Crowds at Disneyland in October 2026

The Matterhorn in Disneyland | Magic in the Planning

October is a genuinely busy month at Disneyland, and that surprises many visitors who assume the summer months are the peak. In recent years, October has consistently ranked among the top three busiest months of the entire year, driven by the popularity of Halloween Time, Oogie Boogie Bash, and fall school breaks across the western United States. As a general rule, crowds get progressively worse as the month goes on, with early October being the most manageable and the final weeks being the most intense.

Best days to visit in October:

  • Weekdays in early October (before Columbus Day weekend) offer the most manageable crowd levels of the entire month
  • Wednesday and Thursday tend to be the least crowded days of the week throughout the month
  • Non-Oogie Boogie Bash nights at DCA, when the park stays open to all guests into the evening
  • On Bash nights, starting your day at DCA in the morning (before the 6 PM closure) and hopping to Disneyland Park for the evening is a smart strategy

Busiest days to visit in October:

  • Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend (October 9-12) – one of the busiest stretches of the entire year at Disneyland, coinciding with widespread fall breaks
  • Halloween weekend (October 29-31) – Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, and Nevada Day on October 31 creates an extra-long holiday weekend with very high crowds
  • Any weekend throughout the month – October weekends are consistently busy due to local passholders, Halloween enthusiasts, and fall break visitors
  • Any date during fall break weeks for California, Utah, and Nevada school districts

October is one of those months where careful planning makes an enormous difference. If you have flexibility, aim for early October weekdays and build your DCA days around the Oogie Boogie Bash schedule. Avoid Columbus Day weekend and the final days of October if crowds are a concern.

October Events at Disneyland

October 2026 is entirely defined by the Halloween season at the Disneyland Resort. Here is what is happening all month long:

Halloween Time (August 21 through October 31) – The beloved fall season is in full swing throughout all of October at the Disneyland Resort. Both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure are transformed with Halloween decor, character costumes, themed entertainment, and seasonal food and merchandise, all included with regular park admission. Highlights include Haunted Mansion Holiday, Halloween Screams nighttime spectacular, the Main Street Pumpkin Festival, Guardians of the Galaxy: Monsters After Dark, and the full Cars Land Haul-O-Ween transformation with Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree and Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween. October is when the Halloween Time atmosphere truly reaches its full potential.

Oogie Boogie Bash (select nights through October 31) – The separately ticketed Halloween party at Disney California Adventure runs on the following October dates: October 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27, 29, and 31. This family-friendly after-hours event features trick-or-treating, character experiences, themed entertainment, and festive food and merchandise. October Bash dates tend to sell out faster than any other month, especially those closest to Halloween. Purchase tickets as early as possible. On Bash nights, DCA closes to general admission guests at 6:00 PM.

Plaza de la Familia (August 21 through November 2) – This cultural celebration of family, Dia de los Muertos, and the world of Pixar’s “Coco” runs alongside Halloween Time throughout all of October at Disney California Adventure. A beautiful and meaningful addition to the fall season.

Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day (October 12) – This federal holiday brings significantly elevated crowds to the resort on the surrounding weekend (October 9-12). Many school districts across California, Utah, and Nevada have fall break that same week, compounding the crowd impact. This is one of the busiest weekends of the entire year at Disneyland.

Halloween (October 31) – Halloween itself falls on a Saturday in 2026, which combined with Nevada Day makes for an extra-long holiday weekend. Disneyland goes all out for the final night of the season. Expect some of the biggest crowds of the entire month on October 30 and 31.

Always check the official Disneyland website for the most current event schedule and Oogie Boogie Bash details closer to your travel dates.

October Refurbishments & Closures

October carries over the same refurbishment lineup from earlier in the year. Always check the Disneyland app and website closer to your travel date, as schedules can change with little notice.

How to Plan a Trip to Disneyland in October

Planning a Disneyland trip in October requires a thoughtful approach. The Halloween atmosphere is wonderful, but the crowd dynamics are complex. Your strategy needs to account for which days you visit, the Oogie Boogie Bash schedule, and the fall break calendar for western school districts.

General October strategies:

  • Book early: hotel rooms and dining reservations fill up quickly in October, often months in advance
  • Check the Oogie Boogie Bash schedule before booking your trip and plan your DCA days accordingly
  • On Bash nights, start your day at DCA in the morning and hop to Disneyland Park for the evening after DCA closes to general guests at 6:00 PM
  • Use Lightning Lane for high-demand attractions like Rise of the Resistance, Radiator Springs Racers, and Web Slingers throughout the month
  • Rope drop remains your most valuable tool in October, even on moderately crowded days
  • Pack layers, especially for evenings, as temperatures can drop noticeably after dark

If visiting early October (before October 9):

  • This is the best window of the month for managing crowds. Weekdays in early October offer some of the most manageable wait times of the entire Halloween season
  • Halloween Time is in full swing and the atmosphere is wonderful without the peak crowds of mid and late October
  • Check Pirates of the Caribbean status closer to your trip
  • Secure Oogie Boogie Bash tickets well in advance if you want to attend

If visiting mid-to-late October:

  • Avoid Columbus Day weekend (October 9-12) entirely if crowds are a concern; this is one of the busiest weekends of the entire year
  • If you must visit during fall break week, weekday mornings are your best strategy; use Lightning Lane aggressively and set realistic expectations
  • Halloween weekend (October 29-31) will be extremely crowded; if experiencing Halloween night specifically is a priority, go in fully prepared for peak crowds
  • The Halloween atmosphere is at its absolute most intense in the final week of October, which many visitors find worth the crowd trade-off

Final Verdict: Should You Visit Disneyland in October?

October 2026 is one of the most atmospheric and festive months of the entire year at the Disneyland Resort, but it is also one of the most demanding from a crowd perspective.

If you love Halloween and can tolerate busy parks, October is genuinely magical. The weather is beautiful, the decor is stunning, and the overall Disneyland Halloween experience is unlike anything else at the resort. The key is going in with realistic expectations and a strategic plan. Early October weekdays are your best bet for a more relaxed experience while still enjoying everything Halloween Time has to offer.

If crowds are a dealbreaker for you, September offers the same Halloween Time experience with far fewer people. But if October is your time, embrace it, plan smart, and it will be a trip to remember.

Best and Worst Times to Visit Disneyland in October:

  • Best: Weekdays in early October (before October 9), especially Wednesday and Thursday
  • Busiest: Columbus Day weekend (October 9-12) and Halloween weekend (October 29-31)
  • Worth noting: Oogie Boogie Bash runs almost every other night in October; always check the schedule and plan your DCA days accordingly
  • Key closure: Pirates of the Caribbean, check status closer to your travel date

October is Halloween at Disneyland in full force, and it truly is something special. Plan around the busiest dates, embrace the atmosphere, and you will have an unforgettable trip!

Bottom Line: Disneyland is magical no matter when you choose to visit. October 2026 in particular delivers the full Halloween Time experience at its very best, with beautiful weather and a festive atmosphere that is hard to match anywhere else. Plan smart and enjoy every spooky moment!
