Animal Kingdom Rides and Attractions - Magic in the Planning

By Alyssa Howard

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is unlike any other theme park at Walt Disney World, and honestly, unlike any other theme park anywhere. It’s part zoo, part nature preserve, part thrill park, and part immersive storytelling experience, all woven together in a way that feels genuinely seamless. The animal encounters are real. The conservation mission is real. And the rides, from the soaring heights of Avatar Flight of Passage to the white-water chaos of Kali River Rapids, are as good as anything in the resort.

This is your complete guide to Animal Kingdom rides and attractions, organized by land, with Lightning Lane details, height requirements, and tips to help you plan your day.

Animal Kingdom Lightning Lane: What You Need to Know

Before diving into the Animal Kingdom rides and attractions themselves, it helps to understand how Lightning Lane works here, because it’s structured a little differently than the other three parks.

Animal Kingdom uses both a Lightning Lane Multi Pass and a Lightning Lane Single Pass, but unlike Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios, there are no tiers here. That means when you pre-book your three Multi Pass selections, you can choose any three attractions from the list freely, without the Tier 1 and Tier 2 restrictions that apply elsewhere. It’s a more flexible system and makes planning your day a little simpler.

Disney Resort guests can purchase and pre-book Multi Pass selections 7 days before their first park day. All other guests can book 3 days in advance. Bookings open at 7:00 a.m. Eastern.

Lightning Lane Single Pass (purchased separately):

  • Avatar Flight of Passage

Lightning Lane Multi Pass (choose any three when pre-booking, no tiers):

  • Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
  • Feathered Friends in Flight!
  • Festival of the Lion King
  • Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!
  • Kali River Rapids
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris
  • Na’vi River Journey
  • Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

My general advice: Na’vi River Journey books up the fastest and should be your first Multi Pass selection. Kilimanjaro Safaris is the second priority, since waits grow quickly as the morning heats up. For your third pick, Expedition Everest or Kali River Rapids depending on your group’s thrill tolerance and the weather. Save Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo for later in the day when the shows are less crowded.

Africa Rides and Attractions

Africa is one of the most beautifully realized areas in all of Walt Disney World, designed to feel like the East African village of Harambe. The theming is detailed and immersive, the food is genuinely excellent, and it’s home to one of the most iconic experiences in the entire park: Kilimanjaro Safaris. The Wildlife Express Train also departs from Africa, carrying guests to Conservation Station on the far side of the park.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

Kilimanjaro Safaris is the heart of Animal Kingdom and one of the most extraordinary attractions at any Disney park. You board an open-air safari vehicle and spend about 20 minutes driving through a sprawling savanna ecosystem where real African animals roam freely: elephants, giraffes, lions, rhinos, zebras, hippos, and dozens more. No two safaris are ever exactly alike, because the animals go where they please. Early morning is the best time to visit, when the animals are most active and the light is beautiful for photos.

Asia Rides and Attractions

Asia is Animal Kingdom at its most thrilling. This land is home to Expedition Everest, one of the best roller coasters at Walt Disney World, as well as Kali River Rapids and two outstanding wildlife experiences. The theming throughout Asia is incredibly detailed, drawing inspiration from the villages, temples, and landscapes of Southeast Asia, and it’s worth slowing down to appreciate even when you’re rushing between rides.

This outdoor bird show in Asia showcases a remarkable variety of free-flying birds in a stadium setting, including macaws, hawks, owls, and more. The trainers are knowledgeable and the birds are genuinely impressive in flight. It’s a wonderful show for guests of all ages, and one of the best ways to spend 25 minutes in the shade during the heat of the day.

Kali River Rapids

Kali River Rapids sends groups of guests down a churning river on a circular raft, soaking everyone aboard at least once along the way. The ride weaves through a story about illegal logging in a rainforest, making it one of the more message-driven attractions in the park, but mostly it’s just an extremely wet, extremely fun way to cool off on a hot day. Expect to get soaked.

  • Height Restrictions: 38 inches or taller
  • Lightning Lane: Yes (Multi Pass)
  • Attraction Length: About 5 minutes
  • Who Should Ride: Anyone who meets the height requirement and doesn’t mind getting very wet

Theater in the Wild

Theater in the Wild is home to one of Animal Kingdom’s most beloved shows, tucked into a large open-air theater near the border of Asia and DinoLand (now repurposed following DINOSAUR’s closure in February 2026). It’s a quick walk from both Asia and Discovery Island and well worth building into your day.

Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!

This musical stage show brings Nemo, Marlin, Dory, and the rest of the Finding Nemo cast to life with imaginative puppetry, costumes, and some genuinely inventive staging. It’s a feel-good show that works beautifully for families with young children, and the creative puppetry technique used to portray the underwater world is something you really have to see to appreciate.

Discovery Island Rides and Attractions

Discovery Island sits at the center of Animal Kingdom, anchored by the iconic Tree of Life, a 145-foot artificial tree hand-carved with 325 animals on its bark and roots. It’s the visual heart of the park and one of the most photographed structures at Walt Disney World. The island connects all of Animal Kingdom’s lands and is worth spending time on even just to admire the tree up close and spot the animals carved into it.

Tree of Life

The Tree of Life is not a ride or a show but an experience in itself. Standing at 145 feet tall with a 50-foot root system spread, it is one of the most extraordinary pieces of theme park artistry ever created. Walk slowly around its base and look for the 325 animals carved into the bark, from insects to elephants, hidden in every curve and crevice of the trunk and roots. It’s stunning at any time of day, but especially beautiful in the early morning and at dusk.

This 4D show puts guests in the middle of Zoogether Day, a celebration of unity across Zootopia’s diverse biomes, hosted by a charismatic new wolf character named Heidi Howler alongside Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and friends. The show features original animation, a catchy score, in-theater effects, an animatronic Clawhauser, and ā€œCarrot Visionā€ glasses for the 4D experience. It’s a peaceful, unhurried experience that most guests walk right past on their way to the next attraction. That’s their loss, because the animal encounters here are some of the closest and most personal in the park.

Oasis Attractions

The Oasis is the entrance area of Animal Kingdom, a lush, winding path that eases guests into the park through a series of tropical gardens and small animal habitats. Most guests rush through it on the way to the bigger attractions, but it rewards those who slow down and look around. It’s also where you’ll find Wilderness Explorers, one of the best free activities in any Disney park.

The Oasis Exhibits

Tucked along the winding pathways of the Oasis entrance area, these small habitats house giant anteaters, tree kangaroos, sloths, reptiles, and a variety of exotic birds. Pandora is one of the most visually stunning areas at any theme park anywhere in the world. It’s worth visiting at night, when the bioluminescence effects transform the whole area into something genuinely breathtaking. The two rides here are among the best at Animal Kingdom, and one of them is among the best at any Disney park.
