Disneyland Hotels On Property: A Guide to All Three

Disneyland Hotels on Property - Disneyland Hotel | Magic in the Planning

By Alyssa Howard

There are three official Disneyland hotels on property, and choosing between them is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning your trip.

The Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Pixar Place Hotel each offer something different in terms of theming, location, amenities, and price. I have stayed at two of the three and have family who have stayed at the third, so I can give you an honest, firsthand look at all of them. Whether you are trying to decide what fits your budget, your kids’ interests, or your proximity-to-the-parks priorities, this guide will help you figure out which Disneyland Resort hotel is the right fit for your family.

Why Stay On-Site at the Disneyland Resort?

Before diving into each hotel, it is worth talking about why staying at a Disneyland hotel on property matters in the first place. All three are within easy walking distance of both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, so you can head back to your room for nap time, freshen up mid-day, and get back to the parks without losing much time. That alone makes a huge difference for families with little ones.

On top of location, all registered hotel guests receive one complimentary Lightning Lane entry to a Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction during their resort stay. That is a nice bonus you will not get from an off-site hotel. And of course, there is the intangible magic of being surrounded by Disney theming even when you step away from the parks.

Disneyland Hotel

The Disneyland Hotel holds a very special place in my heart. It was the first Disney resort hotel I ever stayed at, and that sense of nostalgia absolutely washed over me the moment I arrived. This is the original. It has been part of the Disneyland Resort story since 1955 and carries that history with pride.

The hotel is made up of four towers: Fantasy, Adventure, Frontier, and the newest addition, Discovery Tower (home to The Villas at Disneyland Hotel). The three original towers are decorated in an ode to Sorcerer Mickey from Fantasia, with rich royal navy hues, white stars, and even Mickey glove-shaped lighting sconces in the bathrooms. It is charming, retro, and deeply Disney.

Discovery Tower, which celebrated its grand opening on September 28, 2023, is the first new Disneyland Hotel tower since 1979 and Disneyland’s first dedicated Disney Vacation Club property since 2009. Its architecture and design are a perfect blend of modern and retro, designed to fit seamlessly into the mid-century aesthetic of the hotel grounds. And while it is a DVC property, any guest can book here. You do not need to be a DVC member.

The hotel is connected to both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure via the Downtown Disney District, so it is a quick and easy walk to the parks. The Disneyland Monorail even passes right through the property, which adds a little extra magic to every morning.

Bottom Line: If you love classic Disney history and nostalgia and want the most budget-friendly on-site option, the Disneyland Hotel is the place for you. It is a wonderful first Disney resort experience and a great value for families who want to be on Disney property without the flagship price tag.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

I will be completely honest with you: the Grand Californian is something else entirely. Staying here was an experience I will never forget, and it has set a very high bar for every hotel stay since.

From the moment you walk through those stunning stained glass doors into the great hall lobby, you understand that this place is special. The Grand Californian is a tribute to the Arts and Crafts movement popular in California in the early 1900s, with warm woods lining the walls, Mission-style lighting, and inviting sitting areas scattered throughout. The lobby alone is a sight to behold: soaring ceilings, a massive stone fireplace, and rich woodwork everywhere you look. I could have sat in that lobby for hours just taking it all in.

Beyond aesthetics, the Grand Californian’s greatest advantage is its unbeatable location. Conveniently located in the center of the Disneyland Resort, the hotel sits between Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney District, and it has its own private entrance directly into Disney California Adventure. That direct park access was so much fun for us. You can step from the hotel lobby into the park in under two minutes. When you want to pop back to your room or head out for a quick break, it is effortless in a way that you simply cannot replicate with any other hotel.

The amenities match the luxury price tag. Guests can enjoy three pools (Fountain, Redwood, and Mariposa), relax in two whirlpool spas, or take a ride on the 90-foot Redwood Tree waterslide. Poolside cabanas are also available to rent. The Tenaya Stone Spa draws inspiration from the spirit of nature and Californian craftsman architecture, offering a full-service menu of body treatments, facials, massages, salon services, and fitness classes. Dining is also exceptional on-property, with Storytellers Café hosting a beloved character breakfast with Mickey and friends and the GCH Craftsman Bar serving as a beautiful spot for evening drinks.

Bottom Line: Yes, the Grand Californian is a splurge. But if it fits your budget, it is genuinely worth every penny. The combination of the stunning design, the direct park access, and the exceptional amenities makes it the crown jewel of the Disneyland Resort hotels.

Pixar Place Hotel

The newest kid on the block (at least in its current form) is Pixar Place Hotel, and it has quickly become a fan favorite. Pixar Place Hotel officially opened January 30, 2024, and is the only fully Pixar-themed hotel in the United States (and yes, it is also the only place you can meet Bing Bong, which is reason enough for some families!).

This was formerly known as Paradise Pier Hotel, and the transformation is remarkable. The 15-story high-rise overlooks Disney California Adventure Park and offers comfortable and contemporary Pixar-themed guest rooms, dining options, a relaxing rooftop pool area with a Finding Nemo-themed splash pad and water slide, a play court, a new fitness center, shopping, and more. With a wealth of vibrant artwork on display, the hotel evokes the creativity, artistry, and humor that each Pixar story holds, showing guests how filmmakers bring beloved Pixar movies and short films to life from initial spark to final design.

I personally have not stayed here, but I have family members who have, and they absolutely loved it. The Pixar theming is incredibly immersive. It is like walking through an art gallery dedicated to your favorite Pixar films. Being on Disney property gave them all the perks of on-site staying, and they felt the difference compared to off-property hotels they had used on previous trips.

Pixar Place Hotel guests are allowed to use the Disney California Adventure entrance at the Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, which helps offset the fact that it is the furthest of the three hotels from the parks at about a 10-15 minute walk through Downtown Disney. Two new themed signature suites are also coming later in 2025: the Coco Suite, a cozy two-bedroom suite inspired by Miguel and the Rivera family with vibrant Oaxacan art, and the two-bedroom Incredibles Suite, blending midcentury modern design with a spy-fi twist.

Bottom Line: If your kids are obsessed with Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up, or really any Pixar film, this hotel will genuinely delight them. It is a fantastic value compared to the Grand Californian for families who want the full on-property experience at a more accessible price point.

Which Disneyland Hotel On Property Should You Choose?

There is no wrong answer here. All three Disneyland hotels on property are wonderful options, and all three will give your family the magic of staying inside the Disney bubble. But here is my honest breakdown to help you decide:

  • Choose the Disneyland Hotel – if you love classic Disney history and nostalgia, want the most budget-friendly on-site option, or are a Disney Vacation Club member looking to maximize your points.
  • Choose the Grand Californian – if budget is less of a concern and you want the most luxurious experience, the stunning lobby and Arts and Crafts design, and most importantly, that unbeatable direct entrance into Disney California Adventure.
  • Choose Pixar Place Hotel – if your family are huge Pixar fans, you want a fun and immersive themed hotel at a mid-range price point, and you do not mind the slightly longer walk to the parks.

No matter which you choose, I promise that waking up on Disney property and heading straight to the parks is a feeling you will never forget. It was true for me on my very first trip, and it has been true on every trip since!
