Castaway Cay Guide: Everything You Need to Know
There is a moment that happens on every Disney cruise when the ship pulls up to Castaway Cay and you see those impossibly blue waters for the first time. It does not matter how many times you have been. It still takes your breath away.
My family has visited Castaway Cay three times now, and every single trip has felt completely different. Once it was just my husband and me, and we made a beeline for Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach, and did not look back. The other two visits were with our daughters… once when they were five and six years old and everything was new and magical and wonderfully chaotic, and once when they were teenagers and somehow even more fun to travel with than we expected. Each version of Castaway Cay has been its own kind of perfect.
If you have a Disney cruise on the horizon and Castaway Cay is on the itinerary (and it almost certainly is), this complete Castaway Cay guide covers everything you need to know to make the most of your day on the island.

What Is Castaway Cay?

Castaway Cay is Disney Cruise Line’s private island, located in the Bahamas. Unlike a typical port stop where you disembark into a busy town or tourist area, Castaway Cay is exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests. The entire island has been designed and maintained by Disney, which means the attention to detail, the cleanliness, and the overall experience feel completely consistent with everything else Disney does.
The island offers separate beaches for families and adults, a full-service dining setup, water sports and equipment rentals, port adventures, a nature trail, shopping, and some of the most beautiful water you will ever see in your life. A Disney ship anchored just offshore is the backdrop for the whole day, and it is genuinely one of the most picturesque settings imaginable.
Bottom Line: Castaway Cay is not just a beach stop. It is a fully curated Disney day on a private island, and it is consistently one of the most beloved parts of any Disney cruise itinerary.
Getting Off the Ship: What to Know Before You Go

Getting off the ship at Castaway Cay is one of the smoother port experiences you will have on any cruise, but there are a few things worth knowing before you head down the gangway.
The ship docks directly at the island. Unlike many cruise ports where you have to take a tender (a small boat) from the ship to shore, Castaway Cay has its own pier and the ship docks right there. This makes getting on and off the island significantly easier and faster than a typical tender port, and it means you can pop back to the ship for lunch, a nap, or forgotten sunscreen without it being a big production.
Get off early. This is one of the most important Castaway Cay tips I can give you. The beaches, the rental equipment, and the cabanas (if you have booked one) all fill up fast. Getting off the ship as soon as the gangway opens gives you first pick of beach chairs, the best spots in the shade, and the shortest lines for rentals and food. On our visits we always made it a point to be in the first wave off the ship, and it made a noticeable difference every single time.
Bring your Key to the World card. Your Disney Cruise Line room key (called the Key to the World card) is your ID, your payment method, and your way back onto the ship. Do not leave without it. Everything on the island is charged back to your onboard account, so you do not need cash, but you do need that card.
Check the daily navigators for timing. Disney posts the daily schedule (called the Navigator) in your stateroom and in the app. Check it the night before your Castaway Cay day so you know exactly when the gangway opens and what activities are scheduled throughout the day.
Bottom Line: Getting off the ship at Castaway Cay is easy and seamless, but getting off early is the single best thing you can do to set your day up for success. The island rewards the early risers.
The Tram: Should You Take It?
When you step off the ship and onto the island, you will have the option of walking or taking the tram to the main beach and activity areas. Here is the honest answer: it depends on your group.
The walk from the pier to the family beach area (Family Beach) is not terrible, maybe 10 to 15 minutes at a leisurely pace, and it takes you through some genuinely pretty scenery. If you are traveling with older kids or adults who are happy to walk, it is a perfectly pleasant way to start your island day.
That said, if you are traveling with young kids, a stroller, or anyone who might struggle with the walk in the heat, the tram is absolutely worth taking. It runs regularly and drops you right at the main activity areas. On our trip with our girls when they were five and six, the tram was a non-negotiable… we had beach bags, a stroller, and two very excited little people who had approximately zero interest in walking when there was a tram available.
Pro Tip: If you are heading to Serenity Bay (the adults-only beach), the tram goes there too. It is a longer ride than the family beach stop, but absolutely worth it rather than making that walk in the Bahamas heat.
The Beaches at Castaway Cay
The beaches are the heart of a Castaway Cay day, and the good news is that there is genuinely something for everyone.
Family Beach
Family Beach is the main beach at Castaway Cay and where most guests spend their day. The water is shallow, calm, and that stunning shade of turquoise that looks almost too beautiful to be real. It is ideal for families with kids of all ages, casual swimmers, and anyone who just wants to plant themselves in a beach chair and enjoy the view of the ship anchored offshore.
The water stays shallow for a good distance out, which made it perfect for our daughters when they were young. They could wade and splash and play without us worrying, and we could actually relax a little (a small miracle with a five and six year old). When we came back with them as teenagers, they spent most of the morning in the water and had just as much fun.
Beach chairs and umbrellas are available on a first-come, first-served basis, which is yet another reason to get off the ship early.
Serenity Bay (Adults Only)

If you are sailing without kids or have older kids who are content entertaining themselves for a few hours, Serenity Bay is absolutely worth the tram ride out. It is quieter, less crowded, and has its own bar and food service. The vibe is genuinely relaxing in a way that the family beach, wonderful as it is, simply cannot replicate.
When my husband and I visited just the two of us, we spent the entire day at Serenity Bay. We got drinks, found two chairs in the shade, and essentially did nothing productive for several hours. It was perfect. I still think about it.
Pelican Plunge
Just offshore from the family beach area, Pelican Plunge is a floating water park platform with two waterslides and areas to splash around. It is a huge hit with kids and is accessed by swimming or taking a water float out to it. If your kids are strong enough swimmers and love water slides, this is going to be a highlight of their day.
Bottom Line: Castaway Cay’s beaches are genuinely stunning and well-suited to every type of traveler. Families with young kids will love Family Beach, adults will love Serenity Bay, and older kids will likely divide their time between the water and Pelican Plunge.
Towels: What You Need to Know
This is one of those practical details that is easy to overlook and really should not be.
Disney provides towels on the island, available at towel stations near the beach areas. You do not need to lug towels off the ship with you, which is a genuine quality-of-life improvement. Just pick up towels when you arrive at the beach and return them when you are done.
That said, a few things worth knowing: the towel stations can get picked over as the morning goes on, so grabbing yours when you first arrive is smarter than waiting until you are already set up on the beach and realizing you forgot. Also, some guests choose to bring a smaller personal towel or a microfiber towel from the ship for kids who tend to need a dry towel more frequently than the average adult.
Pro Tip: On our last trip to Castaway Cay, we were a little too relaxed about getting towels and spent more time in the sun than we planned while figuring it out. Learn from us. Grab your towels first, find your spot, then enjoy. Sunscreen first too… we definitely learned that lesson the hard way!
Sunscreen: Please Do Not Skip It
Speaking of sunscreen… I cannot stress this enough. The Bahamas’ sun is intense, the water reflects it back at you, and a full day on the beach with inadequate sun protection will absolutely ruin the rest of your cruise. We learned this lesson on our most recent Castaway Cay stop and came back to the ship looking considerably more pink than we left it.
Apply sunscreen before you get off the ship. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming. Bring more than you think you need. A broad-spectrum SPF 50 or higher is worth it, and water-resistant formulas are a must for a beach day.
Disney does sell sunscreen on the island if you forget, but it is much more expensive than bringing your own from home. Pack it in your beach bag the night before so it is ready to go.
Food at Castaway Cay

The food at Castaway Cay is one of those things that consistently exceeds expectations. It is included in your cruise fare (no extra charge for the basics), well organized, and genuinely good for a beach setting.
Cookie’s BBQ and Cookie’s Too
The main dining setup on the island is a BBQ-style outdoor buffet. Think burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, BBQ ribs, corn on the cob, pasta salad, fruit, and all the classic beach cookout sides. It is casual, plentiful, and honestly hits exactly the right note after a morning in the sun. The food is included in your cruise fare, so there is no extra charge.
Cookie’s Too is a second location that helps manage the lunch rush and keeps lines moving. Both locations serve a similar menu and are open for a set window in the middle of the day, so keep an eye on the timing so you do not miss the lunch service.
Drinks
Non-alcoholic drinks (lemonade, water, soft drinks) are available at the food stations at no extra charge. Alcoholic beverages are available at the bar locations on the island and are charged to your onboard account. There is a bar at Family Beach and a separate bar at Serenity Bay, both of which do a brisk business on a sunny Castaway Cay day.
Ice Cream
Yes, there is ice cream. Yes, it is included. Yes, you should absolutely get some. It is the Bahamas, and you are on a Disney cruise… this is not the time for restraint.
Bottom Line: The food at Castaway Cay is included, plentiful, and much better than you might expect from a beach buffet. Get there a little before peak lunch hours to avoid the longest lines, and do not skip the ice cream.
Shopping at Castaway Cay
There is a shopping area on the island with Castaway Cay-exclusive merchandise that you genuinely cannot get anywhere else, not even on the ship. If you are a Disney Cruise Line fan or a collector of Disney Parks merchandise, this is worth a stop.
The shop carries Castaway Cay-branded clothing, accessories, beach gear, and souvenirs. There are also some fun Bahamas-themed items alongside the Disney-specific merchandise. Everything is charged to your onboard account, so no need for cash.
A few things worth knowing about shopping at Castaway Cay: the selection at the shop on the island tends to be better earlier in the day before things get picked over, and some items (especially the most popular shirts and hats) can sell out by afternoon. If there is something specific you have your eye on, stop by earlier rather than later.
Pro Tip: Some Castaway Cay merchandise is also available on the ship before and after the island stop, but the island-exclusive items are only available while you are actually there. Do not count on finding everything back on the ship.
Kids Activities at Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay does an excellent job of keeping kids entertained well beyond just the beach and water. Here is what is available for the younger set:
Scuttle’s Cove
Scuttle’s Cove is a supervised kids’ activity area on the island where Disney’s youth counselors (the same team who runs the kids clubs on the ship) run activities and games for younger children. It is a great option if you want a little time at Serenity Bay or just want the kids to burn some energy in a structured setting. Check the Navigator for scheduled activity times.
Pelican Plunge
As mentioned above, the floating water park platform is a major hit with kids. Two waterslides and a splash area make it one of the highlights of the island for older kids and tweens especially.
The Nature Trail and Bike Rentals
Castaway Cay has a nature trail that winds around part of the island and offers some genuinely beautiful scenery away from the beach crowds. Bike rentals are available if your family wants to explore on two wheels, which can be a really fun way to see a different side of the island.
Castaway Cay 5K
For the runners and walkers in the family (not just for the kids), the Castaway Cay 5K is a free, self-paced 3.1-mile course around the island. It used to be an organized group race with bibs and a set start time, but it has since been reimagined as a run-your-own-race experience. No registration is required. You simply head to the starting area near the bike rental station whenever you are ready, complete the course at your own pace, and pick up your finisher medal at the bike rental booth when you are done. The whole thing runs on the honor system, and the medal is genuinely a fun souvenir.
A few things worth knowing before you go: there is only one water station along the course and very little shade, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and water. Going first thing after disembarking is the best strategy before the heat of the day builds.
Bottom Line: Castaway Cay has enough to keep guests of all ages happy for a full day. Between the beach, Pelican Plunge, Scuttle’s Cove, the nature trail, and the free self-paced 5K (with a medal at the finish!), there is no shortage of ways for little ones, bigger ones, and adults alike to fill their time.
Port Adventures at Castaway Cay
Disney offers a selection of port adventures at Castaway Cay for guests who want a more structured or active experience beyond the beach. These are bookable through the Disney Cruise Line website or app before your sailing and tend to fill up, so booking early is strongly recommended.
Popular port adventure options at Castaway Cay include:
- Snorkeling excursions – The waters around Castaway Cay are clear and home to some beautiful marine life. Guided snorkeling excursions are available for various age groups and skill levels, and equipment is provided.
- Parasailing – For a birds-eye view of the island and the ship, parasailing is one of the more memorable port adventure options available at Castaway Cay. There are height and weight requirements, so check the specifics before booking.
- Glass-bottom boat tours – A great option for families with younger kids who want to see the underwater world without getting wet. The views through the glass bottom are genuinely impressive.
- Fishing excursions – Guided fishing trips are available for guests who want to try their luck in the Bahamian waters.
- Stingray adventure – A guided interaction with stingrays in a controlled setting, popular with families and a genuinely memorable experience.
Pro Tip: Port adventures book up well in advance, especially the most popular ones like snorkeling and parasailing. As soon as your booking window opens, reserve any port adventures you are interested in. Waiting until you are on the ship often means your first choice is already sold out.
Equipment Rentals at Castaway Cay
If you want to get out on the water beyond just swimming, Castaway Cay offers a solid selection of equipment rentals available right on the island.
Rental options typically include:
- Snorkel equipment (mask, fins, and vest)
- Sea kayaks
- Paddleboards
- Aqua duck tubes (for floating in the water)
- Beach chairs and umbrellas (complimentary, first-come, first-served)
- Bicycles (for the nature trail)
Rentals are charged to your onboard account and are priced per hour or per half day, depending on the item. Lines for rentals, especially snorkel equipment, can get long as the morning progresses. If rentals are part of your plan, heading to the rental area shortly after arriving on the island is worth doing before you settle into your beach chair.
Bottom Line: The rental options at Castaway Cay are well priced relative to what you would pay at a typical beach resort, and the equipment is well maintained. Snorkel gear in particular is worth renting if you have never snorkeled before… the waters around the island are a beautiful introduction to it.
Cabanas at Castaway Cay
If you want the ultimate Castaway Cay experience, booking a private cabana is the way to do it. Cabanas are available at both Family Beach and Serenity Bay and offer a level of comfort and convenience that is genuinely hard to beat on a beach day.
What is included with a cabana:
- A private shaded structure with lounge chairs and comfortable seating
- A dedicated attendant throughout the day
- A cooler stocked with water, soft drinks, and fruit (restocked throughout the day)
- Snorkel equipment for everyone in your party
- A personal safe for valuables
- Floats and beach toys
- A private outdoor shower
Cabanas are not inexpensive, but for a special occasion or a larger group, the value is real. Having a guaranteed shaded home base, a dedicated attendant, and all of those extras included makes the day feel genuinely luxurious. They book up extremely fast, often within minutes of the booking window opening for a given sailing. If a cabana is on your wish list, set a reminder and be ready to book the moment your window opens.
Bottom Line: Cabanas at Castaway Cay are a splurge, but they are one of the better splurges Disney Cruise Line offers. If it is a special trip or a milestone celebration, the cabana experience is worth every penny.
Practical Tips for Your Castaway Cay Day
A few final tips worth knowing before your day on the island:
- Bring a waterproof bag or case for your phone. You will want photos of those waters and that ship, and a waterproof case means you can take them without worrying.
- Wear your swimsuit under your clothes. Getting changed on the ship before you disembark saves time and means you are ready to hit the beach the moment you arrive.
- The ship is still open during the day. If you need a break from the sun, want a proper sit-down lunch in an air-conditioned dining room, or need to grab something from your stateroom, you can walk back up the gangway and onto the ship at any time. This is one of the great advantages of a docked port stop.
- Watch the return time carefully. The ship will not wait for you if you are late. Disney posts the all-aboard time clearly in the Navigator and on signage around the island. Keep an eye on it and give yourself plenty of time to get back, especially if you are at Serenity Bay and need to tram back to the pier.
- The water is genuinely beautiful. I know that sounds obvious, but I want to say it anyway. There is something about the combination of that clear turquoise water, the white sand, and the Disney ship sitting just offshore that is unlike anywhere else I have ever been. Take a moment to just stop and look at it. You will be glad you did.
Final Thoughts: Your Castaway Cay Guide
Castaway Cay is one of those rare travel experiences that lives up to every expectation and then some. Whether you are there with a spouse, young kids, teenagers, or all of the above at different points in your life like we have been, the island has a way of delivering exactly what you need.
My family has made memories there that we still talk about, from the lazy adults-only day at Serenity Bay to watching our daughters experience those blue waters for the first time as little kids, wide-eyed and sunburned and completely in love with the whole thing. Even as teenagers they could not hide how much they loved it, which is honestly its own kind of magic.
If Castaway Cay is on your Disney cruise itinerary, get off the ship early, grab your towels and sunscreen, and give yourself permission to just enjoy it. It is a genuinely special place.
